Commercial Retaining Walls in Burnaby

Large-scale structural walls for developers, municipalities, and institutions

Commercial retaining walls involve scale, engineering complexity, and project coordination that goes well beyond typical residential work. Whether it's a multi-level commercial development needing soil retention across a significant grade change, a municipal road cut requiring permanent stabilization, an institutional campus needing terraced site grading, or a parking structure requiring retaining walls along its perimeter — commercial retaining work demands engineered design, documented construction, and a contractor who can execute cleanly on a larger scale.

We work on commercial retaining wall projects across Burnaby and the Greater Vancouver area. Our projects include development site preparation, commercial building perimeter walls, municipal and institutional work, industrial site grading, and multi-family residential development support.

Engineering and Documentation

Every commercial retaining wall project requires engineering. The scope of engineering involvement depends on wall height, loading conditions, proximity to structures, and the specific requirements of the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

A typical commercial retaining wall project requires: geotechnical investigation (subsurface investigation to characterize soil conditions, bearing capacity, and groundwater levels), structural engineering for the wall system, building permit drawings and calculations stamped by a registered engineer, and field review by the engineer during construction.

We coordinate the engineering process, providing site information, access for geotechnical investigation, and construction scheduling that accommodates field review requirements. Where clients have existing engineering for their project, we work directly from their drawings.

As-built documentation — confirming what was actually built relative to the design — is typically required on commercial projects and we provide this as a standard deliverable.

Wall Types for Commercial Applications

Commercial retaining walls use the full range of wall systems, selected based on height, loading, site constraints, and budget.

Geosynthetic reinforced segmental walls (GRSW): engineered interlocking block systems with geogrid reinforcement. These can be built to significant heights (6–8m and higher with proper engineering) and are cost-effective for large face areas. They're commonly used on development sites, highway corridors, and large commercial grading projects.

Poured concrete cantilever and counterfort walls: the standard for high-load applications, walls adjacent to structures, and anywhere a defined structural section with documented load capacity is required. These are engineered, formed, and poured in place.

Soldier pile and lagging walls: steel H-piles driven at regular intervals with horizontal wood or concrete lagging spanning between. This is the standard for temporary shoring and is also used for permanent walls on tight sites where excavating back for a conventional wall is impractical.

Sheet pile walls: steel sheet piling driven for earth retention and as cut-off walls in high groundwater conditions. Used in marine and waterfront applications, below-grade construction, and sites with very high groundwater.

MSE (mechanically stabilized earth) walls: large-scale systems using precast concrete facing panels or blocks with geosynthetic reinforcement extending back into compacted fill. Common on highway projects and large-scale commercial developments.

Project Management for Commercial Retaining Wall Projects

Commercial projects require project management that residential work doesn't: coordination with general contractors, other trades, site supervisors, and inspectors; scheduling that works around other construction activity; documentation and progress reporting; and adherence to construction schedules with commercial consequences for delays.

We provide a dedicated project manager for commercial retaining wall projects, maintain a construction log with daily progress documentation, coordinate inspection hold points with the engineer and building authority, and communicate proactively when site conditions or schedule changes affect the retaining wall scope.

RFI and submittal management is handled systematically — we respond to requests promptly and document decisions clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size commercial retaining wall projects do you handle?

We handle projects from small commercial site work (a few hundred square metres of wall) to large development site retaining (thousands of square metres, multiple wall types). Contact us with your project scope for an initial discussion.

Do you work as a subcontractor to general contractors?

Yes. We frequently work as a specialty subcontractor on larger projects where the general contractor is managing the overall construction. We're comfortable with standard subcontract terms and insurance requirements.

Can you provide bonding for commercial projects?

We maintain performance and payment bonding capacity for eligible commercial projects. Contact us early in the tendering process to discuss bonding requirements.
